    The Secret Government

Posted by admin on April 18th, 2010 and filed under security policy | 25 Comments »

It aired on PBS in 1987 and is as good as anything on the tape (must see). Moyers is a very respected TV journalist who also worked for Lyndon B. Johnson and has a very professional approach. He interviews many different people involved with the CIA and other government agencies. His documentary gives quite an overview of what has actually happened in the last 50 years regarding the CIA and the cold war (including Iran, Guatamala, Cuba, Viet Nam and Chile). He features such people as Ralph McGeehee and Phil Retinger (both former CIA agents), Rear Admiral Gene La Rocque (Ret. U.S.N.), Theodore Bissell (active in the CIA at the time), Sen. Frank Church and many others. Moyers is so very credible. The full video “The Secret Government” is 90 minutes – this segment is edited by Frank Dorrel to 20 minutes.

    Security Around MySQL

Posted by admin on April 16th, 2010 and filed under network security | No Comments »

Danil Zburivsky (The Pythian Group) speaks at the 2010 O’Reilly MySQL User Conference & Expo on Security Around MySQL

    Slides – http://assets.en.oreilly.com/1/event/36/Security%20Around%20MySQL%20Presentation.odp

From the official conference description at: http://en.oreilly.com/mysql2010/public/schedule/detail/13458

In this talk well look at the different ways to compromise MySQL security in typical deployment scenarios through vulnerabilities in the underlying hardware, the operating system, applications, and the network. We will not be focusing just on security from hackers, but from internal sources as well who may be intending to steal data.
    Some of these methods include:

    * using memory dumps/straces to extract encryption keys/encrypted disk data
    * using DRAC/RSA cards to gain access to secure servers
    * gathering passwords at the switch layer.

Well also discuss ways to prevent these attacks on the MySQL data including:

    * encryption both at the network and disk level
    * advanced access controls including AppArmor and SELINUX
    * network security

How to make a Cat5E cable.

Fast Ethernet and Gigabit computer networks require Enhanced Category 5 high-speed cabling to distribute data, voice and video. Cables4sure Enhanced Cat5 350Mhz Snag less Patch Cables are always extremely High quality. These CAT5e cables will handle bandwidth intensive applications up to 350 Mhz and beyond. Each CAT5e cable comes UL verified to meet all Cat 5e cables TIA/EIA standards, and drastically reduce both impedance and structural return loss (SRL) as compared to standard 100 Mhz CAT5 cable. Constructed with high-quality wire and a shortened body plug will keep Near-end Cross talk (NEXT) levels to a minimum. The molded, snag-free boot prevents unwanted cable snags during installation and provides extra strain-relief. Cables4sure 350 MHz Snag less CAT5e patch cables are available in a variety of colors to easily color-code your network installation.

-Cat5e cable connector: 50-micron gold plated RJ-45 Male to Male

-Cat5e cable conductor: 4-pair 24 AWG Stranded Copper

    -Cat5e cable jacket: PVC

-Molded, Snag-Free boot prevents unwanted cable snags

    Applications:

    -1000 BASE-T; 100 BASE-T; 10 BASE-T (IEEE 802.3)
